Story Point Sizing

About the Story Point Sizing Template

Accurate effort estimation is a critical skill for project managers and product owners focused on timelines, budgets, and results. Stormboard’s Story Point Sizing Template was built for Agile teams continuously planning sprints and project iterations, helping to set realistic project scopes & workloads, and take some of the pressure off of PMs by introducing a repeatable, collaborative estimation process.

By focusing on effort instead of time, the Story Point Sizing Template helps teams estimate based on task complexity rather than individual speed. This leads to better decisions about project scope and workload, increasing transparency and understanding within the team.

This template is perfect for t-shirt sizing, but thanks to Stormboard's adjustable smart sections, the template can be changed for your preferred sizing technique, like planning poker, dot voting, or the bucket system. This template encourages team collaboration, making sure everyone understands and helps with the effort required. This efficient estimation process ensures realistic effort assessments, keeping projects on track and within their defined scope.

During your Agile planning session (like sprint planning or PI Planning), gather your team and introduce the user stories to be estimated. Have a group discussion to assign story points to each user story based on its effort. Use discussion prompts, if available, to guide the estimation process effectively.

If you are using the Stormboard for Jira, Azure DevOps, or similar integration, the first section of this template is where you can sync your backlog using Stormboard’s innovative, true bi-directional integrations.
